Lower East Side Tenement Museum
The heart of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is its landmark
tenement building, home to 7,000 people from 20 nations between 1863 and
1935.
Visitors to the Museum tour the cramped living spaces and learn
about the lives of past residents: a German Jewish family (1870s), an
Eastern European Orthodox Jewish family (1918), and an Italian Catholic
family (1930s).
Guided Tours
The Tenement building can only be viewed by guided tour ($9 for adults, $7 for students/seniors).
For tours and times, visit www.tenement.org/tours.html. Prices for all tickets include admission to the museum's video histories of the Lower East Side.
Note
There are no elevators in this historic building, making a tour inside with a stroller or wheelchair impossible. The museum does, however, offer accessible tours of the neighborhood.
Store
The Museum gift store sells an
array of curios, reproductions,
hand-crafted items, and books
and gifts that represent the
various immigrant/migrant
groups who have come
through the neighborhood,
past and present.
