The Drawing Center
The Drawing Center is the only not-for-profit institution in the country to focus solely on the exhibition of drawings, both contemporary and historic. It was established in 1976 to provide opportunities for emerging and under-recognized artists; to demonstrate the significance and diversity of drawings throughout history; and to stimulate public dialogue on issues of art and culture.
At the Gallery
by Jason Wiggins
The Drawing Center is a small art gallery on an out-of-the-way, but not hard-to-find, side street in Soho. The Center is similar to other small art galleries in the neighborhood, with white walls and columns; the architecture isn't what makes it unique.
The distinction of the Drawing Center is that it focuses exclusively on drawings, both color and black & white, although some of the works do blur the line between drawing and sculpture. The main exhibition area is at 35 Wooster Street and the Drawing Room is at 40 Wooster Street. A visit to both will take an hour or more.
